Abstract :

The purpose of this research is to evaluate antibacterial activities of probiotics combination (Bifidobacteria bifidum : Lactobacillus acidophillus 1: 1 v/v) with infusion of guava leaves against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio cholerae. The combination treatments used in various ratio infusion of guava leaves with probiotic milk 1: 9, 2:8, 3:7, 4:6, 5:5, 6:4, 7:3, 8:2, and 9:1. The antibacterial activity were conducted by Farmakope Indonesia (1995) method. The results showed that combination infusion of guava leaves and probiotic milk (B. bifidum  and L.acidophilus) were potential as antibacterial agents against E.coli, S.typhimurium, and V.cholerae. The optimal combination for E. coli and V. cholerae was obtained from the ratio of (infusion guava leaves: probiotic milk) 9:1 with a diameters of inhibition zone were 14.61 ± 0.07 mm and 16.16 ± 0.15 mm respectively, whilst for S. typhimurium the optimal combination was obtained from the ratio of 7:3 with inhibition diameters of 11.33 ± 0.35 mm. Statistical analysis showed all optimum conditions were significantly different with p<0.05. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) after dilution of ratio 9: 1 which were obtained for E. coli 12% (v/v) and V. Cholerae 25% (v/v). The MIC against S. typhimurium was 25% (v/v) respectively from the ratio of 7:3.
