Abstract :
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, recorded more than 67 million people, almost 2% of the global populationolder than 40 years. Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type of glaucoma. In Indonesia, glaucoma is thesecond cause of blindness after cataract. Defects in the myocilin gene (MYOC) have been shown to be associated with POAG. There isno reported about analysis of MYOC gene polymorphism in relation to occurance of POAG in Malay race especially from Malay racein Palembang. The purpose of this study was to analyze polymorphism of MYOC gene among POAG Malay race patients in Palembang.Study design of this research is observational analytic comparative study type using cross sectional design. Analyze polymorphism ofMYOC gene was done by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique using restriction enzyme Ava1 and confi rmationsequencing, among 50 unrelated POAG compared with 50 non POAG Malay race in Dr. Moch. Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Therewere signifi cant difference genotype and alelle MYOC gene polymorphism in exon 1 and exon 3 between unrelated POAG patients andnon POAG patients (p < 0.001). This study suggested that there were relationship between MYOC gene polymorphism and occuranceof POAG Malay race patients in Palembang.
