Abstract :
This study arises from the concerns toward Ujian Nasional (UN) which has always been a problem and de-pressing for the students. The standardization of UN which aimed to improve the quality of education has in-stead widen the gap of both the quality and quantity of existing graduates, consequently created the miscon-ducts in the implementation of UN. The desire of both local governments and schools to achieve high passing rate and scores in order to establish the “successful” image has eventually leads to repressive acts toward teachers and students. This study aimed to comprehend the pressures experienced by the teachers and stu-dents as symbolic violence, along with its mechanism. The focus of this study is analysed using the concepts of Pierre Bourdieu.This is a qualitative study which employs the inductive-qualitative method with reflective analysis. The study was conducted at SMAN 3 Palu, a regular high school which has started to become popular among various communities in the city of Palu.The result of this study indicated that the implementation of UN has formed the mechanism of symbolic vio-lence through the exercise of power and pedagogy in the school, which ultimately put the heaviest burden on the teachers and students.
