Abstract :
Identification of the plane crash victims Garuda DC-9 in 1987 was done in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatera/Dr.Pirngadi Hospital. The plane carrying 45 passengers on board including the air crews, crashed while landing at Polonia airport. 18 passengers escaped the disater, 8 died after being hospitalized, 19 passengers died at the crash spot. The 19 victims with another victim referred by a hospital, were examined for identification. Out of the 20 victims, 19 victims could be identified positively. The remaining one, according to the manifest must be Mr. Murakami. But the height and the blood group of the deceased mis-matched with the data obtained from the family and Consulate of Japan in Medan. On the other hand, team of Forensic Medicine and Prof. Kazuo Suzuki found the same result of victim’s dental examination and was nearly identical to dental record of the deceased taken 6 years back. So far the family members could not accept the victims as Mr. Murakami. The Indonesian Police Head Quarters in Jakarta summoned for the exhumation of the deceased and sent the corpse to the Department of Criminology, University of Indonesia, Jakarta for futher examination. Till the present time, the identification of the victim is still in question.
