Abstract :
As a denture base, acrylic resin in intimate contact with a large area of the oral mucosa. Thus, it is important to know the biocompatibility of the resin. After polymerization small amount of methyl metacrylate monomer remain in the acrylic resins. Part of the residual monomer is gradually leached out and may react against the oral mucosa. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the biocompatibility of conventional and microwave cured acrylic resins that immersed and not immersed in running water for 17 hours after polymerization process, on viability of cultured baby hamster kidney (BHK 21) cell line. The data were analyzed with t-test. The result of this study indicated that there is significant difference between cell viability of conventional and microwave cured acrylic resin which are immersed and not immersed in running water for 17 hour. The conclusion immersed had the same cytotoxicity. The best result is acrylic resin microwave cured that immersed in running water for 17 hours.
