Abstract :
Background:Mutans Streptococci (MS) are concidered as major bacteria in dental caries. Recently the study of initial acquisition of MS showed that the younger the child acquired MS the higher dental caries risk of the child. Purpose: The study was aimed to identify the streptococci bacteria in babies’ oral cavity on initial acquisition of MS. Methods: The subjects were 30 babies age 5 months who visit community health group (posyandu) at Simomulyo area, Surabaya City for 6 months period. Plaque samples were taken from the babies once a month until initial acquisition of MS was found. The bacteria were isolated on BHI and TYC broth respectively and reproduced using BAP/Lavental. The determination of cultivated bacteria were done using API20 Strep. Results: The results showed 84% of the babies positive acquired MS at average age of 9 month. The determination test revealed that 24% of the babies acquired S.mutans at 7,5 months old, 4% acquired S.sobrinus at 10 months old, 20% acquired S.sanguinis at 7,4 months old, 16% acquired S.salivarius at 7,75 months old, 16% acquired S.oralis at 7,75 months old, and 4% acquired S.bovis at 9 months. Conclusion: The study showed that the streptococci bacteria acquired by the babies at initial acquisition of MS were Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus oralis, and Streptococcus bovis.
