Matrix metalloproteinases in oral biology research

      Abstract :

      Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc dependent endopeptidase, which are capable of collectively degrading extracellular matrix proteins. Matrix metalloproteinases form a large family of homologous neutral proteinases that have specific roles in organ development and morphogenesis, in normal tissue turnover, cell migration, defense and repair. The expression of most matrix metalloproteinases is transcriptionally regulated by growth factors, hormones, cytokines and cellular transformation. In recent years MMPs have had a strong involve on dental science. MMPs was expressed by many cells on dental environment. The present article reviewed a short introduction to some major advanced matrix metalloproteinases in oral biology research. This include studies MMPs in bone development, MMP-7, MMP-8, MMP-13, and MMP-20.
