Normal variation of mesiodistal tooth width in bugisnese and torajanese

      Abstract :

      In orthodontics, the accurate data of mesiodistal tooth width is very important especially for establishing diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion. The factors contributing in the various widths of teeth are: ethnics, gender, genetic and environment. Buginese and Torajanese are two of the four mayor ethnics living in South Sulawesi. This study was analytic observationally experiment done towards high school students in five regencies of South Sulawesi. The subjects should meet the following criteria: at least 17 years old of age, from the left to the right first molar should be present, normal occlusion, no filling or caries at interproximal site, never undergone orthodontic treatment and having no mixed-blood from at least two levels of upper generation. The number of sample was 704 peoples, consisted of 166 Torajanese girls, 166 Buginese girls, 186 Torajanese boys and 186 Buginese boys. The results of the study indicated that the Torajanese boys had wider mesiodistal size than those of the girls; Buginese boys had wider mesiodistal size width than those of the girls. The Torajanese girls had wider mesiodistal size than those of the Buginese girls, and Torajanese boys had wider mesiodistal size than those of Buginese boys.
