Relations between blood and salivary glucose level in diabetic patients

Author :

      Abstract :

Saliva is a liquid secretion from oral cavity that has a composition similar to that of blood, since saliva results from the infiltration of blood serum through the salivary gland. As there are relations between saliva and blood serum, a study was undertaken on the relations between glucose level in blood and in the saliva. Patients with diabetes mellitus present with hyperglycemia, which produces various complications that may have influence on the function of salivary gland itself. These facts raise questions whether there is difference between salivary glucose level in diabetic patients and that in normal, and whether there are relations between blood and salivary glucose level in diabetic patients and non-diabetic control. Results showed that salivary glucose level in diabetic patients (mean: 2.8700) was higher than that in non-diabetic (mean: 0.9421) with significance level of < 0.05. However, the difference did not demonstrate linear relations between the increase of salivary and blood glucose level. It indicated that salivary glucose level could not be employed as an alternative examination to determine regulation status of diabetes mellitus.
