      Abstract :

Overall, 25.4% of the population got a periodontal disease. About 30% of the patients with posterior gingivitis were toothpicks users, this because of an incorrect use of interproximal stimulators like toothpicks. In response to these cases, the new design of toothpicks made from Acrylic Butadiene Styrene has been created. The inspiration came from the sickle-formed explorer. It has a good adaptation in interproximal areas, furcation, and deep pocket at posterior teeth. It can reach the interproximal area easily and effectively without causing any gingival destruction. However, the performance of these new sickle-formed toothpicks has not been clinically proven yet. The aim of this research was to compare the shape and function between the new sickle-formed toothpicks and the conventional. The observational analytic research design with in-depth interview for 50 respondents was conducted. The validity and reliability testing was done. The conclusion was the new sickle–formed toothpicks are stronger, more effective to pick the debris up for the anterior and posterior teeth, more practical, and more hygienic than the conventional ones. They are also looked more luxurious, better looking, more hygienic, and can be sterilized and re-used for more than once. However, these new sickle-formed toothpicks should be re-designed on its tip and handle performance by adding some scratches or stopper on their handle, make it longer and add some attractive color. It need more research to get the best material and also should be packed in the healthy and sterile packages to make perfect.
