The effectivity of tooth paste containing siwak wood powder in inhibiting the dental plaque formation

      Abstract :

      The aim of this study was to prove that the tooth paste containing wood powder of siwak inhibit the formation of dental plaque. Dental plaque is a soft deposit adhered to the matrix consisting of extra cellular polysaccharide glycoprotein. The dental plaque should be removed, otherwise it will destroy the deeper tissue and then causing tooth loss. The samples were the dental students aged 20 – 24 years, male and female, no wear orthodontic appliances, the teeth are in a good alignment. Samples were divided into two groups, 50 samples respectively. The first group brushed their teeth with siwak tooth paste and the second group using placebo. The samples were scaled and polished, just before starting the research so they have zero plaque score. Both groups were then instructed to brush their teeth using “Roll method”. The plaque was scored using disclosing agent, recording to the dental plaque score of Turesky-Gilmore-Glickman which was modified by Quigley-Hein Index. The plaque’s score was taken after 4 and 8 hours after brushing. Statistical analysis was done by using Mann Whitney Test (U Test). The result of comparation between the siwak tooth paste and placebo in 4 hours after brushing was 0,014 smaller than p = 0, 05. Its means that there was significant difference in 4 hours after tooth brushing between siwak tooth paste and placebo. The same result was shown in 8 hours after brushing. The conclusion of this research showed that the siwak tooth paste inhibited the formation of the dental plaque in 4 and 8 hours.
