The level of secretory iga to antigen i / ii of streptococcus mutans in saliva of caries free and active caries subject

Author :

      Abstract :

The Secretory IgA antigen I/II of S. mutans is presumed to play a role in the defence mechanism of the teeth againts dental caries, namely in inhibiting the adherence of S. mutans to the tooth’s surface. A laboratory study (observational and cross sectional) to determine the concentrations of sIgA was carried out on the whole saliva of 48 caries-free and 48 active caries subjects comprisingstudents of the Dental Faculty of Airlangga University, Surabaya. The aim of this study is to compare the concentrationts of sIgA to antigen I/II of S. mutans in the saliva of caries-free and active caries subjects admitted to this study. The concentrations of sIgA was assayed with the indirect ELISA method using Ag I/II of S. mutans as the antigen horseradish peroxydase lebeled goat anti-human IgA and goat anti-human IgM as the conjugate, H2O2 0.3% and OPD (O-Phenylenediamine HCl) as the chromognic substrate. The data obtained were analyzed by independent t-test. The result of this study showed that the concentrations of sIgA to antigen I/II of S. mutans in whole saliva of caries-free subjects did not differ significantly (p . 0.005) from active caries subject.
