Atherosclerotic lesions of carotid arteries in patients with acute myocardial infarction (ami)

Author :

      Abstract :

Atherosclerosis in carotid arteries can coincide with that in coronary arteries, and there is the same propensity between increases in degree of carotid artery atherosclerosis and number and severity of atherosclerotic lesions in coronary arteries. Ultrasonographic examination of carotid arteries is a non-invasive, reliable and cost-effective method to assess the progressiveness or regressiveness of carotid artery atherosclerosis. By analysing the incidence of atherosclerotic lesions in carotid artery on the basis of ultrasonographic examination of 20 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and 20 control at the Cardiology Department in Dr Soetomo Hospital, adjusted for their age, sex and risk factors, it has been found that the presence of carotid artery atherosclerosis is related to the occurrence of AMI. The presence of carotid artery atherosclerosis is about twice higher in AMI patients that that found in controls (65% vs. 35%) although this difference is not significant statistically. Among the risk factors investigated in this study, i.e., age, sex, smoking habit, lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglyceride), blood pressure, and blood glucose, only age, total cholesterol and smoking habit showed strong effect on the incidence of carotid artery atherosclerosis.
