Prevalence of cataract in diabetic patients at ophthalmology outpatient clinic, dr soetomo hospital, surabaya

Abstract :

A study on the prevalence and characteristics of cataract in diabetic patients admitted at Ophthalmology Outpatient Clinic, Dr Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, has been conducted. The study was carried out for 10 months, from December 2001 to September 2002. The obtained cataract prevalence rate in the clinic was 54.34% and the prevalence rate of diabetic retinopathy was 31.52%. From 184 observed diabetic patients, cataract in women was found in 53 (52.12%) patients and in men was found in 47 (47.88%) patients. Female cataract patients mostly aged 50 - 60 years, which was comprising 21 (18.67%) patients. Most of male cataract patients also belonged to age group of 50 - 60 years, comprising 15 (14.67%) patients. The youngest patient aged 30 years, and the oldest 81 years. There were 16 (14.80%) eyes, in which cataract was firstly present at visual acuity 6/10. Most of the cataract patients belonged to the group with visual acuity of 6/40, consisting of 42 (49.00%) eyes. From 100 DM patients with cataract, it was successfully found that the youngest onset was in age 20 years, and most common onset was in age group of 50 - 60 years, which was found in 49 (25.80%) patients. Most of cataract patients with diabetic duration of 10 - 14 years comprised 58 (31.60%) patients
