Abstract :
Since 2003, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 viruses have caused outbreaks among poultry in Indonesia and up to now give an impact on the highest number of human victims worldwide. Quail has been considered potential intermediate hosts of Avian Influenza viruses because it has two specific receptors on trachea cells wich known as Sialic acid α 2,3 galactose and Sialic acid α 2,6 galactose. The aim of this study was to isolated and identifed Avian Influenza H5N1 viruses in quail in East Java Province. We therefore conducted surveillance studies and found eight H5N1 viruses in quail based on specific HA gen and specific NA gen by RT-PCR test. Thus, it can be concluded that Avian Influenza viruses can be isolated and identifed in quails in Province of East Java
