Abstract :
The aim of this study is to know the correlation between the lens swelling and glycemic state as shown by casual blood glucose level and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) value in type 2 diabetic population. In this observational cross sectional study A-scan biometric with contact technique was underwent on thirty three type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in the outpatient clinic of Department of Ophthalmology Dr. Soetomo General Hospital from January 2010 to July 2010. The lens swelling, duration of DM, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), and casual blood glucose levels were recorded. All of them were completed with objective refraction using snellen chart. There was significantly positive corellation between lens thickness and HbAic (p < 0.00), but there was no correlation between lens thickness and casual blood glucose level and duration of diabetes. Lens thickness is necessary to be observed as one of the mechanism of blurred vision experienced by diabetic patient in hyperglycemic state. Prolonged and severe hyperglycemia that could be evaluated by HbA1C examination is needed to induce lens thickness changes.
