Abstract :

Dental caries prevention in children could be performed by topical application of fluoride on the teeth surfaces. The aims of the study were to examine the number of S mutans colony on the oral mouth and dental caries activity in children after 3 and 30 days of fluoride topical application. The samples were the children of Mardi Putra Elementary School Surabaya, which divided into experiment group and negative control group with 10 children each. The criteria of sample were: the age of the children were 10-12 years old, DMF-t index were 3-6, no gingivitis, and fluoride had never been applied topically. Plaque samples for S mutans colony counting and dental caries sensitivity test (cariostat) were taken before and after 3 days and 30 days topical fluoride application. The study showed that before and after 3 and 30 days topical application of fluoride the S mutans colony counting decreased significantly, but not between 3 and 30 days applications. The dental caries activity was significantly different between before and after 3 days fluoride application, but after 3 and 30 days was not significantly different.
