Abstract :
Digital literacy is the ability to understand and use information from a variety of digital sources. Study of digital literacy has been widely studied by some experts in the international area, but in Indonesia the research in this topic has not been done. Digital literacy competence is used to deal with the explosion of information due to the advent of the internet. In fact, the current of internet users are increasing and the majority of them are teenagers. Internet used by teenagers has been varied, not only used to search for academic information but also to build relationships through social networking sites. The problem is the progress of Internet technology led to excessive use of information technology among teenagers, giving rise to the occurrence of cases are not desirable. Therefore, this study was conducted to describe the level of digital literacy competences of teenagers in the city of Surabaya reviewed based on aspects of internet searching, hypertextual navigation, content evaluation and knowledge assembly by using theory of digital literacy belonging to Gilster (1997). The sampling technique is done in a non-probability sampling using purposive sampling technique in 99 adolescents consisting: Student of Airlangga University (Campus B), Students of SMA N 4 Surabaya, Students of SMA GIKI 2 Surabaya, Students of SMP N 6 Surabaya, and Students of SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Surabaya. Data processing techniques performed using SPSS 21.0 and Microsoft Excel with the results in the form of frequency tables and score table. Score table is used to indicate the level of digital literacy of teenagers in the city of Surabaya with the categories of high, medium and low. The results showed that the level of digital literacy based on four aspects as follows: the level of teenager's digital literacy based on aspects of internet searching has been relatively high, the level of teenager's digital literacy based on aspects of hypertextual navigation has been relatively high, the level of teenager's digital literacy based on aspect of content evaluation is still relatively medium, and the level of teenager's digital literacy based on aspects of assembly knowledge has been relatively high
