The scarcity of food availability and food consumption pattern of under welfare families in food insecurity period

Abstract :

The objective of this research was to study food availability and consumption of under welfare family at food insecurity area, Kediri district. This research was observational descriptive with qualitative and cross sectional approach. Research sample were 50 under welfare family which have children under three years old in insecurity food and nutrition area. The result research showed that most of under welfare family (> 50,0%) in both area, were low educated and their main job were as building and agriculture laborer with low income. Food insecurity may occurred on dry season (August – October) and wet season (March – October). The peak of food insecurity at Gampengrejo area in March because its difficulty to find job, whereas the peak season in Semen area was in September because of decreasing production and difficulty to get job. Most of family have enough availability of staple food and vegetable, and also there were simple of menu that only include staple food and vegetable. The most family ( more than 50,0%) have consumption Energy that still under RDA and part of them have severe deficit or starvation risk. It was suggested, to increase family income based on full worker agriculture or non agriculture and food based intervention need to do in dry season (August-October) and rainy season (March-May).
