Abstract :

This essay was begun with a spirit to celebrate 150 years of Georg Simmel (1858-1918). On the beginning of writing, I recognized that Simmel’s works and works about Simmel in Bahasa are rarely to find. This essay is far from an attempt to explore all Simmel’s ideas in sociology. But this essay try to bundle Simmel’s ideas with the spirit of celebrating 100 years of Kebangkitan Nasional, 20 May 1908, (National Awakening). I am using Simmel’s ideas of society to analysis this monumental moment of Indonesian making sense of “Indonesia”, the Indonesian character building. Simmel’s ideas will useful to make sense of the exsistence of “Indonesian society” and its consequences.
