Abstract :

The identity of Indonesian children, during the New Order period, was constructed through dominantsystems: the family, the school and the media. These institutions were deliberately set up to support theNew Order’s political system in order to represent Indonesian children as a model of citizenship. TheNew Order created a national identity for Indonesian children through the family system, which isinfluenced by dominant Javanese culture, and extended this identity through the school. Thus, theschooling system recreated the patriarchal family structure in the classroom, placing children into asubordinate position, as they are in the family. Furthermore, the media, which was controlled by the stateduring the New Order, was also used in constructing a socially and culturally acceptable idea ofchildhood, systematically building the image of Indonesian children as ideal citizens. After the fall of theNew Order the patriarchal family model remains in place in Indonesian political discourse. The family, inthis context, is conceptualised as part of the political structure.
