Revitalisation of chinese-surabaya cultural values in strengthening the nation’s character

Abstract :

Globalisasi menjadi tantangan utama bagi etnis Tionghoa untuk mempertahankan serta merevitalisasi nilai  budaya  Tionghoa,  bukan  hanya  sebagai  identitas  budaya  etnis,  namun  juga  dalam  rangka memperkuat  karakter  bangsa.  Fokus  utama  penelitian  ini  adalah  upaya  merevitalisasi  nilai-nilai budaya  etnis  Tionghoa  Surabaya  sebagai  bagian  karakter  bangsa  dan  kebertahanan  kebudayaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan  metode sejarah.  Data yang digunakan berasal dari berbagai  sumber, berupa sumber tertulis, lisan, dan foto. Sumber tertulis berupa artikel surat kabar maupun majalah yang terbit di Surabaya maupun kota lain. Foto-foto juga digunakan untuk memberikan informasi tentang kegiatan etnis Tionghoa dalam merepresentasikan kebudayaan mereka. Penggunaan sumber lisan  dilakukan  dengan  metode  wawancara  mendalam  (indepth  interview).  Informan  ditentukan secara acak terstratifikasi (stratified random sampling), yakni dipilih secara acak berdasarkan kategori- kategori  tertentu,  yaitu  berdasarkan  pendidikan,  usia,  profesi,  kelas  sosial,  dan  lain-lain.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa upaya merevitalisasi nilai-nilai budaya Tionghoa dilakukan dalam berbagai  bidang,  mulai  dari  bidang  pendidikan,  keagamaan,  pedoman  hidup  hingga  kesenian. Kemampuan menjaga dan merawat tradisi dari berbagai pengaruh modernisasi menjadi salah satu kekuatan utama dari warga Tionghoa untuk bersikap optimis dalam menapaki perubahan sosial yang terjadi. Kemampuan mengelola kehidupan sosial melalui internalisasi nilai-nilai kultural tersebut menunjukkan  kuatnya  modal  dasar  masyarakat  Tionghoa  dalam  membentuk  kohesi  sosial  yang dinamis dan demokratis, serta kemandirian sebagai warga bangsa. Kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa etnis Tionghoa merupakan representasi masyarakat di Surabaya yang masih memegang teguh adat dan nilai budaya yang diwariskan oleh leluhur.Kata kunci: budaya Tionghoa, karakter bangsa, revitalisasiAbstractGlobalization is a major challenge for the Chinese community to maintain and revitalise the value of Chinese culture, not only as ethnic cultural identity, but also in order to strengthen the nation’s character. The main focus of this study is the effort to revitalize the values of Chinese culture Surabaya as part of the nation’s character and cultural survival. This study uses historical method. The data used were from a variety of sources, in forms of writings, stories, and photos. Written sources were from newspapers and magazine articles published in Surabaya and other cities. Photographs were also used to provide information about the activities of the ethnic Chinese in representing their culture. The use of oral sources was done by in-depth interviews (depth interview). Informants were recruited via  stratified  random  sampling,  based  on  certain  categories,  namely  education,  age,  profession, social class, and others. The results showed that the effort to revitalise the values of Chinese culture is done in a variety of fields, ranging from education, religion, way of life to the arts. The ability to maintain and care for the traditions of the various influences of modernization became one of the main forces of the Chinese people to be optimistic in treading the social changes that occurred. The ability to manage social life through the internalisation of cultural values shows strong capital base of the Chinese community in forming a dynamic social cohesion and democracy, and self-reliance as citizens of the nation. This study shows that Chinese ethnic is a representation of the community in Surabaya who still adhere to traditional and cultural values inherited by the ancestors.Keywords: Chinese culture, nation’s character, revitalisation
