Understanding parents behavior of children with autism in psychiatric clinic dr. soetomo hospital surabaya

Abstract :
Autism is a development disturbance wich main signs and symptom is kognitif, language, behavior disturbance and inability to socialized with other. The word autism come from greek auto wich mean alone/self, there for an autistic child is being considered to life in his/her own world. One of many factor that caused autism is genetic factor, however there are still many other factors that considered to be the cause of autism it self. The development of a nation, wich being followed by increasing economical needs, is one of the factor that caused both parent to work. This situation caused the lack of mother role in both educational and the well being of the child it self. Lack of understanding and attention from the mother to the child caused a miss in recognition of early autism signs and symptom. Lack of understanding to the autism it self lead to poor acceptance of the mother to the child because the mother considered that the child is handicapped forever. This research is intended to understand the effect of mothers knowledge about autism to the acceptance of the child wich has an autism.The amount of subject for this research is 23 person, wich all is a mother that has an autistic child that being cared in the psychiatric clinic Dr. Soetomo hospital Surabaya. The technique wich being used to obtain the samples are incidental sampling. This research used two scale, the scale of understanding/knowledge about autism and the scale of acceptance of the autistic child. For the understanding/knowledge scale of the mother the results is 31 valid and 4 not valid (14,24,27,33). The valid score has rbt between 0,84-0,876. The acceptance scale of the mother that has an autistic child proclaimed reliable with rtt score 0,911 and 0,914. The result is there is significant correlation between the knowledge/understanding about autism and the acceptance of the mother toward her autistic child. The knowledge/understandings about autism of the mothers has an effect approximately 20,5% of the acceptance toward her autistic child, whereas 79,5% being affected by another factors, such as the educational background, family opinion about autism and how long does the autistic child receive therapy.
