Abstract :
Chronic otitis media is a common disease in Indonesia. Eradication of the pathology located in the middle ear and mastoid requires surgical intervention and if possible hearing restoration must be done by reconstructing the ossicular chain and closure the perforation of the ear drum. Techniques of mastoidectomy followed by reconstruction of the ossicular chain are: Modified radical mastoidectomy and Tympanomastoidectomy. This study was a comparative study, in which the data were taken from medical records of patients in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Dr Soetomo Hospital, during the year 1996 - 2000. Results of this study were: 1. Applying the modified radical mastoidectomy: Dry ear 89.2 %, successful graft uptake 82.6 %, hearing improvement 47.1 % and overall result 44.9 %. 2. Tympanomastoidectomy: Dry ear 89.5 %, successful graft uptake 74.7 %, hearing improvement 75.8 % and overall result 66.3 %.
