      Abstract :

In the last four years, the infant mortality rate in Indonesia has been decreasing. However, it is not followed by the decrease of neonates mortality rate at the first week of their living, which was 50 % of all infant mortality. The aim of this research was to identify the mortality rate of infants with birthweight of 2000 grams or less. It was an observational study using retrospective and descriptive design. Population studied were infants in Dr Soetomo Hospital Surabaya with birthweight of < 2000 gram born in or referred to Dr Soetomo Hospital. Data on mortality colleted were secondary data obtained from Neonates Intensive Observation Room in Emergency Care Installation, Neonates Intermediate Room in Department of Child Health, Join Treatment Room (Emergency) Care Installation, Department of Child Health, Delivery Room I and II) and Isolation Room I and II in Department of Child Health. Data were processed and presented descriptively. Result showed that 39.76% of all infants with birthweight of < 2000 grams died. It occurred more among referred patients compared to patients born in Dr Soetomo Hospital. The death of referred infants showed predominant percentage in each month for one year. Most remarkable difference occurred in October, which was 1.47%. Five causes of death were asphyxia, respiratory distress syndrome, hypothermia, sepsis, and pneumonia. Disease pattern between infants born in Dr Soetomo Hospital and those referred to Dr Soetomo Hospital was similar, but the distribution of each disease was different. Inadequate provider also contributed to infant mortality. Hence, resuscitation training for related health care workers is needed. Socialization for preventing nosocomial infection should be improved too, as well as appropriate referral procedure by conducting seminar or workshop on Neonatal emergency management for nurses and doctors.
