      Abstract :

      Isolation Frequency of enteropathogens from diarrheal stools in 1996 and 1997 were examined in Surabaya, Indonesia. A total of 463 patients with diarrhea in children under 2 years of age were enrolled.Bacterial enteropathogens other than Campylobacter jejuni and Clostridium difficile were positive in 88 cases out of 144 61.1%) and 207 cases out of 319 (64.9%) in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Rotavirus was detected in 52 cases of 144 examined (36.1%) and 134 cases of 319 (42%) in 1996 and 1997, respectively; and 22 cases of 52 (42.3%) and 41 cases of 134 (30.6%) were co-infected with bacterial pathogens.Diarrheagenic E.coli were dominant isolates in 1996 and 1997 while Vibrio cholerae O1, Aeromonas hydrophila, Salmonella spp and Shigella spp were also isolated from the patients with lower frequencies.
