The role of jamu (indonesian herbal medicine) for facing the need for drugs

Author :

      Abstract :

The knowledge of indigenous drugs is part of the public health sector within the Indonesian health system. Jamu or herbal medicine in Indonesia has a big role in achieving a better equity of primary health care during the economic crisis. Jamu in the daily life of many Indonesians have been used mainly for self-medication. They obtain jamu from several sources e.g from jamu gendong, jamu industries, herbalists or sometimes preparing the herbal extracts themselves, quite often even using medicinal plants from their own garden. Indonesia is a good market for herbal medicine. Since September 1999, there are 673 small-scale and 83 big-scale traditional medicine industries in Indonesia. For the poor people, herbal medicine is an alternative drug therapy. Although scientifically most are not yet approved because of little pre-clinical and clinical trials, but yet empirically the herbs have proven to be safe and effective. Traditional/ herbal medicine has its own market, providing medication to some of the need of Indonesian people.
