The use of ultrasound in the diagnosis of breast lesions in young women

Author :

      Abstract :

Ultrasound is one of the breast imaging modalities and is the primary diagnostic tool for differentiating solid masses from benign cysts. In practice, mammography and ultrasound are frequently used to assess breast lesions, because these two investigations typically give complementary information. Ultrasound is recommended as the primary tool for symptoms / signs in women aged 35 years and younger, women who are pregnant and lactating. In 1999, we observed 69 patients who underwent breast ultrasound and histology examinations. We found masses on both breasts (36.2%) and the upper outer quadrant (41.5%) is the commonest side. On Pathological findings, 92.2% of all solid masses are fibroadenoma, while fibrocystic diseases are 50% of all non-solid masses. Using diagnostic tests, we revealed that ultrasound is capable of detecting mass with a sensitivity of 93.5%, a specificity of 58.8%, and a rate of accuracy of 87.2%.
