Pengaruh pemberian sari ikan gabus (channa ntriata) terhadap perbaikan kondisi diabetes pada tikus wistar (rattus norvegicus) diabetes mellitus

Abstract :

Excessive glycation and protein modification occur in people with diabetes. These result in oxidative damage, decrease of tissue protein and langerhans island damage, leading to reduction of insulin secretion, increased blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. These conditions, if not immediately handled, will trigger vascular damage. Channa striata extract (CSE) contains high quality protein and essential microminerals which has been used as biopharma and human albumin subtitute. However, the use of this extract for diabetics has not been elaborated. This study was aimed to determine the effect of the CSE on diabetic profile of rats (Rattus norvegicus) by analyzing blood glucose, insulin and the size of the langerhans island. The rats was orally induced with a single dose of 55 mg/kg streptozotocin. The study used 10 treatment groups, (1) negative control, (2) positive control, (3) diabetic rats of CSE 0:36 g/ kg CSE, (4) diabetic rats of 0.72 g/kg CSE, (5) diabetic rats of 1:08 g/kg CSE, which were sacrificed after 4 days. Five other similar groups were sacrificed after 8 days. The results showed that average intake of energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate of rats were well over 79% of the supplied feed. The doses of 0.72 g and 1.08 g/kg weight/day reduced blood glucose levels. The group of 0.72 g/kg and 1.08 g/kg ECS of 4 days treatments resulted in higher insulin production as compared to similar groups of 8 days treatment counterpart. The larger langerhans island was found on rats given 0.36 g/kg CSE after 4 days treatment as compared to 8 days treatment counterpart. It is concluded that the extract of Channa striata can be beneficial for diabetics, although the effects are not yet significant.
