Abstract :

Children have their own functions and meanings specific to everyfamily. Forms of infant’s care are influenced by socio -culturalenvironment and environmental conditions of residences. There manythings inseparable from Javanese infant care, including a bedong (apiece of cloth for wrapping infant’s body), gurita (baby’s vest), oto(cloth binder wrapped around infant’s stomach and chest fastened bystrings), umbilical cord care, navel care, beliefs, and rituals. Thepurpose of the present research was to determine forms of infant’s care,as performed by grandmother and mother until selapan age (36 days).Furthermore, it investigated changes in infant’s care until selapan ageas performed by grandmother and mother and symbo ls emerged duringinfant’s care until selapan age. The passing of time and environmentalconditions led to changes in infant’s care. Many forms of infant’s carewere related to certain symbols. Those symbols represented parents’expectations to their child ren. The symbols were frequently found inrituals of ari-ari (placenta) care and slametan (Javanese ceremonialmeal). There were changes in infant’s care as performed by motherrelative to grandmother.
