Abstract :

Catalonia’s separation process from Spain through referendum in 2014 became different because the presence of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Their historical background as the symbol of Catalonia and Spain play a significant role in the conflict process. That is because during referendum process, their rivalry has transformed not only reflects the rivalry between two clubs in the football field, but also in the political sphere through the positioning and the using of both club as a identity conflict platform by the society and the government of Catalonia and Spain as a symbol of their identity. As the result, in the conflict process between Catalonia and Spain, appeared a new conflict corridor which have not been considered previously by Spain, a conflict through a popular issues in both Catalonia and Spain, a football rivalry. Through this study, the authors then attempted to see how the rivalry between two clubs as a symbol of the identity of these two areas then provide specific threats in the process of the conflict. By using the constructivist paradigm and qualitative data analysis techniques, the study sought to determine changes in the role of both clubs in the referendum process, and how it gives specific impacts during the separation conflict takes place.
