Effect of margarine and shortening trans fatty acid on rats (rattus norvegicus) hdl cholesterol level

Abstract :

The aim of this research was to determine the decreases of HDL cholesterol level in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) that given the trans fatty acid derived from margarine and shortening. This research was conducted in the Laboratory of Biochemistry Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya. This research used twenty-five male white rats were replication into five treatment groups, consist of  control group (P0) are not given trans fatty acids, treatment group 1 (P1) were given 1,2 g/day of margarine, treatment group 2 (P2) were given 1,8 g/day of margarine, treatment group 3 (P3) were given 1,2 g/day of shortening, and treatment group 4 (P4) were given 1,8 g/day of shortening. This research was conducted for 8 weeks. Based on the analysis of data using ANOVA test showed no significant difference (p> 0,05) in each treatment group (P0, P1, P2, P3 and P4). This results showed that the administration of 1,2 grams of margarine and 1,8 grams and 1,2 grams of shortening and 1,8 grams for eight weeks does not give effect to the reduction in blood cholesterol HDL levels of white rats.
