Effect of phyllanthus niruri linn extracts on blood glucose levels in diabetic rats (rattus norvegicus) induced by alloxan

Abstract :

The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of Phyllantus niruri Linn reducing blood glucose in rats (Rattus norvegicus) which induced by alloxan. Twenty five healthty wistar male rats (Rattus norvegicus) with 100 – 150 gram avarage body weight and two – three month old were used in study. This rats were adapted for seven days and devided into five group. First group (P0) as control negatif or normal blood glucose was induced by 1 ml sodium chloride 0.9%, P1 which induced by 150 mg/kg body weights alloxan intraperitoneally as positive control. P2, P3 and P4 was injected by 150mg/kg body weights alloxan and 0.63 mg/kg body weights, 2.7 mg/kg body weights and 6.26 mg/kg body weights Phyllantus niruri Linn extract. This result showed that Phyllantus niruri Linn extract can reduce blood glucose in rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by alloxan. Treatment using Phyllanthus niruri Linn extract 6.26 mg/kg body weights (P4) decrease blood glucose in rats induced by alloxan, but not significant (p>0.05) with 0.63 mg/kg body weights (P2) and 2.7 mg/kg body weights (P3). Flavonoid in Phyllantus niruri Linn extract as antioxidant is expected can inhibit free radical, inhibit lipid peroxidation and improve the structure cell membrane.
