Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological changes in duodenum of wistar rats after giving borax using different subchronic toxicity doses. The research has been done on April, 2th 2012-May, 29th 2012 at Department of Pathology Veterinary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University Airlangga. Twenty male rats (Rattus norvegicus strain Wistar) aged 45 days with BW 100 g were used. These animals were divided into four groups (P0, P1, P2, and P3). P0 were treated with sterile aquadest 0,5 ml/rats/day, P1 were treated with borax 19 mg/rats/day, P2 were treated with borax 26 mg/rats/day, and P3 were treated with borax 37 mg/rats/day. This research has been conducted for 14 days to determine the toxic effects of borax on the duodenum. The data were compared using Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test. Statistical comparisons were performed using SPSS v20.0 for windows. The result showed that borax significantly caused cloudy swelling, congestion, necrosis and erosion of the villi on duodenal histopathology (p<0,05).
