Abstract :

Velvet Revolution in the late of 1989 delivered fundamental changes in political, economic, social and cultural aspects in the Czech Republic. The Communist regime dominated the country since the end of World War II had been shifted by the democratic system. This transitional period also shows that mass demonstration insisted government to give more concern on environmental issues. Something that people could not do when communist regime authorized because they didn't provide freedom to express people's aspiration. At state level, policies which had been implemented by the government did not support the environment preservation. They much support the exploration of nature sources to purchase as much as economic profit and make prosperous for their own group. But it changed in the beginning of 1990s, when the new government gave opportunities for the environmental non-government organizations (NGOs) to make diplomacy. Since then, NGOs are not struggling radically anymore. Unfortunately, the government supporting has been banned by the rejection of environmentalism which consider as a dangerous and forbidden ideology. Even until the Czech Republic became a member of European Union officially in 2004, roles of environmental organizations, especially in regional level, has not influencing significantly. Therefore, until today, environmental NGOs in the Czech Republic still face some of challenges and will be discussed in this paper.
