Abstract :
Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN) has been growing as an advance regional organization since its establishment in 1967. AFTA, an economic bloc within ASEAN is seen as a crucial achievement of the organization. Since its ratification in 1992, AFTA has targeted that the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), one of APEC’s pillar, should have been implemented as late as 2003. Economic issues are one of important aspects of ASEAN cooperation, in which Indonesia has been intensively involved. As the largest country in terms of market and geography, Indonesia is expected to play a key role in the economic bloc. However, things could be different in realization judging from the actual condition confronting by Indonesia. The article explains about challenges and constraints facing by Indonesia behind the implementation of ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) toward AEC.
