Abstract :
The study was aimed to investigated the sediment quality of intensive brackish water shrimp farming, and to determine the relationship between the sediment quality on the one hand, and final biomass production, fry stocking density, survival rate, and water quality, on the other. It was expected that the results of the study confirm that sediment quality might be used as an indicator in the decrease of Penaeus monodon Fab. shrimp production. The parameters observed were the soil organic matter, cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, soil pH, and NH4-N. The production characteristics were periodically monitored as routine procedure by the pond technicians. The results of the statistical analysis indicated that the soil organic matter significantly influenced the production of shrimp. The accumulation of organic matter decreased the shrimp production biomass. Negative correlation was evident between organic carbon, cation exchange capacity, and soil pH on the one hand, and shrimp production on the other. On the contrary, positive correlation was shown between the redox potential and the NH4-N content. Positive correlation was evident between production and fry stocking density, survival rate, and individual weight at harvest. The highest shrimp yield was obtained at the lowest oxygen content. However, the oxygen content in all units was still higher than 3 mg/l which was in fact the minimal requirement for shrimp growth. It was assumed that high biomass production would consume more oxygen. As the result, the oxygen availability in water declined. It was considered that the oxygen content could be used to estimate the shrimp production. Monitoring results indicated that the water quality parameter should be in optimal range for shrimp growth.
