Abstract :

The aim of this case study is to report the successful result of heavy silicone oil tamponade in repeated total rhegmatogenous retinal detachment management in pseudophakic eye. A 59-years-old pseudophakic man suffered from bilateral total retinal detachments. His right visual acuity was hand movement and left visual acuity was light perception. Funduscopy revealed retinal detachment with an inferior large retinal tear of the right eye and retinal detachment with severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy of the left eye. Therefore, the right eye had better prognosis. First surgery used silicone oil tamponade, but a residual retinal detachment still existed at inferotemporal quadrant. Then second surgery with heavy silicone oil tamponade was performed due to previous management failure. Retinal anatomic reattachment of right eye was achieved after second surgery, and the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) became 3/60 one week after later surgery. After one month follow-up, BCVA was 6/20. The patient felt satisfied. Heavy silicone oil tamponade in the surgical steps of retinal detachment was beneficial in retinal reattachment that formerly failed to be attached by the first surgery.
