Abstract :
Eyelid and periocular skin lesions are common in patients referred to ophthalmologist. The main goal in the evaluation of these lesions is to differ malignant from benign lesions. In general, the majority of malignant tumors affecting the eyelid and periocular area are slowly enlarging, destructive lesions that distort or frankly destroy eyelid anatomy. It is extremely difficult to make the correct diagnosis of an eyelid lesion without a biopsy. Early diagnosis can significantly reduce morbidity and, indeed, mortality associated with malignant eyelid tumor. However, malignant eyelid tumors are diagnosed early only if a high degree of clinical suspicion is applied when examining all eyelid lesions. Many different treatment modalities have been advocated, by a variety of medical practitioners, for the management of malignant tumors in the periocular region. The management of all malignant eyelid tumors depend on: correct histological diagnosis, assessment of tumor margins, assessment of local and systemic tumor spread. The goal in the surgical management of malignant eyelid tumors are: complete eradication of the tumor with minimal sacrifice of normal adjacent tissues.
