Female workers in foreign investment companies

      Abstract :

      This research intends to know if there is different treatment toward female workers compared to male workers in obtaining rights and responsibilities as they work in foreign investment companies in Surabaya Municipality. It should cover company treatments, wages, compensation and social security, allowances received by female workers, job promotions, and work areas that should be done by women. This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method through disseminating questioners to female workers in Surabaya. Secondary data are taken from BPS (Center of Statistics Bureau) Jawa Timur and BPS Surabaya Municipality. The research results that generally there is no significant different treatment in foreign investment companies toward female workers. Most respondents (92%) claim that they are given the same opportunity as male workers to occupy specific positions in the companies. Wages, allowances and social security received by female workers are no different that those received by male workers. However, there are certain positions in the companies still occupied exclusively by men such as driver, chiller & boiler, generator set operator, quality control and so forth. It is estimated because such jobs are closely related to women’s physical power in handling these jobs.
