Abstract :
Hepatitis G Virus (HGV) are positive, single stranded RNA, as are those of members of Flaviviridae. HGV has been reported as an etiologic agent of post transfusion viral hepatitis. Infection with HGV can be diagnosed by RNA detection by PCR with nested primers deduced from the nonstructural-3 (NS3) region.Thalassemia patients is a high risk group patients infected with HGV because usually they need multiple transfusions. In this study we determined HGV RNA by using PCR technique from 10 Thalassemia patients sera. HGV RNA was detected in 5 of 10 (50%) sera from Thalassemia patients. The result of this study seems higher compared with the results from other researchers; it might be caused by the sample size of this study is not quiet enough. Further investigations is needed to investigate the real prevalence of HGV RNA infections among Thalassemia patients.
