Abstract :

Hydronephrosis may be erroneously diagnosed as abdominal tumor especially in the pediatric population. hydronephrosis is a dilatation of the renal pelvis and calyces, with ureteral stenosis as a possible cause. longstanding untreated hydronephrosis may result in renal failure. frequency of hydronephrosis in large autopsy series is approximately 3.1% from birth to 80 years. prevalence in boys is 3.3% and girls 2.9%. duplex kidney occur in 0.8% of the general population, many of whom are asymptomatic. children with duplex kidneys may be prone to urinary tract infections because of vesicoureteric reflux obstruction. the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) is the most common site of obstruction in the upper urinary system, occuring an estimated 1 in 1500 births. surgical management is usually required once symptoms occur. management of hydronephrosis differs significantly from abdominal tumor. heminephrectomy is a chosen treatment in hydronephrosis of the upper kidney pole associated with UPJ stenosis and complete duplication. importantly, renal function remains normal after heminephrectomy. we report one case of left sided hydronephrosis with subpelvic stenosis of the upper pole moiety and complete duplication of the renal collecting system. the message of this report is to increase awareness of hydronephrosis as a differential in abdominal tumors in childhood, followed by appropriate and optimum management.
