Abstract :

ABSTRACT Risk assessment is the overall process of estimating the magnitude of a risk and deciding whether or not the risk is tolerable. This study have the main purposes of identifying the hazards, assessing the pure risk, assessing control measures implemented and assessing residual risk associated with welding process of double bottom section ship building in PT. BOSSEGORO Indoyard Consortium. This study was an observational study with cross-sectional approach. Primary data were collected by means of interview and observation. The objects of the study were the processes including OxyLPG welding, SMAW and MAG. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively by risk assessment matrix. The results showed that the most widely found hazard in the welding process was electrocution. Out of 64 pure risks identified, the majority of them (82.8%) were categorized as high risk. The control measures implemented were engineering controls, administrative controls and PPE, but their implementation was still inadequate. The implementation of control measures had caused changes in risk categories from the higher to lower risks (54.7%) whereas the rest (45.3%) were found unchanged. The changes found were mostly from high to medium risk (45.7%). Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that the risk related to welding process in this company is high and the control measures implemented are still inadequate. Therefore, it is recommended that the company implement all the required control measures in order to mitigate the risk level.   Keywords: risk assessment, welding process
