Abstract :

Sick Building Syndrome hasn’t got serious attention  yet. Children have  high risk to get bad effect  from poor indoor  air quality caused by less-cleaning household equipments, office  tools,  and  air conditioner. It will decrease indoor air quality then caused sick building syndrome. Objectives of this study were to identify physical  and chemical air quality in classroom and identify the students’ health impairment. This was an observational study  with cross-sectional approach. Interview, measurements of air temperature, relative humidity,  dust concentration, gas of CO and NO2 in the classroom of 6th grader were  used in this study.  Number of samples in two locations was 65 students, collected using inclusion  criteria. Data collected were  analyzed descriptively. Result  of this study  showed that dust  concentration, CO and  NO2  level  were  within the  standards, while  temperature and  humidity  had  exceeded the  standards. Complaints received from students were  nasal,  eye  and  skin  irritation, sore  throat, and  nausea respectively. It is suggested  that the air conditioner should be  maintained at regular intervals, teachers and  student should participate  in keeping the classroom clean and checking indoor air quality periodically (Including: physical, chemical and microbiology parameter) so, health impairment can be minimized.   Keywords: physical  and chemical air quality, classroom, air conditioner, health impairment
