Abstract :

Food packaging is an important thing that is used to protect food from damage. Almost all food packaging materials are currently using plastic. However, the use of plastic as packaging material face a variety of environmental problems that nature  that  can not  be  naturally (nonbiodegradable) so that  can pollute  the environment. Along with the increasing awareness of the human will this problem, then alternative solutions needed to reduce the environmental pollution caused by the use of plastics as food packaging is to use biodegradable packaging. Biodegradable packaging used in this study consists of the main material in the form of starch and additional materials in the form chitosan and sorbitol as a plasticizer. This study aims to determine the effect of plasticizer sorbitol on the characteristics (thickness, tensile strength, and percent elongation) produced biodegradable packaging and to know the volume of sorbitol best plasticizer for biodegradable packaging produced. This study uses a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and five replications. The treatments used in this study were sorbitol volume 0.5 ml; 1.5 ml; and 2 ml. Based on the research that has been done, the value of an average thickness between 0.15 mm-0.25 mm, tensile strength between 21.55 MPa-32.63 MPa, and the percent elongation between 2.50%-3.67%. The best sorbitol volume addition treatment for the thickness characteristic of biodegradable packaging in this study is treatment C (sorbitol volume 1,5 ml).
