Abstract :

Carotenoid is one of natural colorant which could be found in plants or microalgae. Lutein is one of carotenoid which has utility in the field of health. It has utility to prevent macular degeneration of the eye and retina damage due to blue light, protecting the skin from UV radiation, as a natural dye in the tissue of animals or plants and as precursors of vitamin A. Lutein could be found in microalgae. Botryococcus braunii is one of microalgae as a source of lutein. Salinity is a limiting factor for the growth of phytoplankton. Changes in salinity of the culture medium can affect the lutein content of B. braunii. The treatment is the difference salinity in the culture medium, A (10 ppt), B (15 ppt), C (20 ppt), D (25 ppt) and E (30 ppt). Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine the effect of treatment and continued by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. The supporting parameters measured were the growth of B. braunii and water quality include pH, DO and temperature. The results showed that the difference salinity in the culture medium of B. braunii effect on lutein content of B. braunii. The highest content of lutein obtained in treatment C (20 ppt) on the 6th day reaching 0.00350 μg/g wet weight.
