Abstract :

Malaria is still the most dangerous parasitic disease in the tropics. Attempts to provide alternative treatments which are highly efficacious, safe and widely available i.e. traditional medicine is therefore, required. Asam gelugur (Garcinia atroviridis Griff T Anders) is one of traditional medicines which has been recognized as an effective antimalarial drug. This study is therefore, aimed to assess the effect of Garcinia atroviridis leaf extract on Plasmodium berghei efficacy oral preparation on mice as a model. Thirty mice were inoculated by P. berghei and then randomly allocated into 6 groups of 5 mice which were treated with the following dose of Garcinia atroviridis leaf extract: 90 mg/kgBW, 180mg/ kgBW, 360mg/kBW , 720mg/kgBW and another control group were given a solution of NaCl 0,9% and fansidar with dose of 5mg/kgBW/day. Each groups were. treated for the periode of 4 days after the inoculation of Plasmodium berghei. The degree of parasitemia were examined daily using thin blood smears up to 4 days from the inoculation and were analyzed by log-probit method. It can be shown from the study that an oral dose of 360mg/kg of G atroviridis had a statistically significant inhibition effect (p
