Abstract :

The present study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of protein tyrosin phosphatase inhibitor, vanadyl sulphate, in the decreasing of blood glucose concentration in streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic mice. The diabetic model was elicited by twice intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin 75mg/kg followed with 50mg/kg. Diabetes mellitus occurred on day 26 after streptozotocin injection and was represented with the increase of blood glucose concentration from 155,6±40,2 mg/dl to 251,1±48,9 mg/dl. Administration of vanadyl sulphate in various concentration affected blood glucose concentration in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. The result showed that treatment with vanadyl sulphate 30-200 mg/kg significantly decreased the blood glucose level in the streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice compared to vehicle treatment (30mg/kg, p=0,002; 50mg/kg, p=0,001; 100mg/kg, p=0,017; 150mg/kg, p=0,001; 200mg/kg, p=0,001), whereas the lower doses have no effect (1 mg/kg, p=0,128; 10mg/kg, p=0,223). Furthermore, the potential effect of vanadyl sulphate in the decreasing blood glucose level was maintenanced although the treatment was discontinuated.
