Abstract :

Indonesian used many plants to cure diabetes mellitus and among them are Andrographis paniculata known as ‘sambiloto’ and Syzigium polyanthum known as ‘salam’. Combination of A. paniculata and S. polyanthum to treat diabetes mellitus are claimed to have a better result. This research was intended to investigate the toxicity of ethanolic extract of the mixture of A. paniculata and S. polyanthum. Acute toxicity investigation revealed that LD50 of the extract on mice was 19,473 g/kg body weight, hence categorized as ‘practically non-toxic substance’. Subacute toxicity test on male rats for two months duration, with the dose 0.125 mg, 0.250 mg and 0.625 mg/kg body weight given orally once a day showed no significant difference ( = 0.05) for the GOT and GPT serum enzymes activities between control and treated groups. Serum creatinine assay also showed no significant difference ( = 0.05) for all groups. Terratogenic effect of the extract was studied on mice and the results showed no malformation was observed on the offsprings. Body weight of the offsprings also showed no significant difference ( = 0.05) among all groups.
