Abstract :

Generally, the purpose of this research is to find out the mother’s diet, the duration of exclusive breastfeeding, and the development of baby’s/child’s weight in Mojolangu Public Health Center of Lowokwaru Malang District area. This research is an observational research using cross sectional design. Research population covers all babies aged 6 to 24 months in Malang. Data collecting was done by interview using Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and asking about the duration of exclusive breastfeeding since the baby was born, and weight data analysis from the Growth Monitoring Card (KMS). Data taken then are tabulated and analyzed descriptively. To find out the relationship between variables, we did Chi-Square statistic test. Research results shows that most of the mothers are in fair category (66.7%) and good category (15.4%), only 17.9% has poor diet category. Mostly the duration of exclusive breastfeeding to baby/child is only until the age of less than one month (41.0%). Most of children under five years old who become our respondents (80%) experiencing weight increasing. Weight increasing of the respondents is between 0.2 to 1.14 kg with the average of 0.6 ± 0.24 kg, and the average of exclusive breastfeeding duration is 2.5 ± 2.2 months, while the weight which is not increasing even decreasing (20.00%) is caused by the duration of exclusive breastfeeding is only 1.1 ± 1.8 months. There is a tendency the better diet that the mother has, the longer duration also for exclusive breastfeeding. But, Chi-Square statistic test result shows that there is a non significant relationship (p=0.872) between mother’s diet and duration of exclusive breastfeeding. There is a tendency the longer duration of breastfeeding, the more increasing in development of baby’s/child’s weight. But, Chi-Square statistic test result shows that there is a non significant relationship (p=0.572) between the duration of exclusive breastfeeding and the development of baby’s/child’s weight.
